Floyd Australia is helping save the iconic W-Class Trams

Yarra Trams are restoring its fleet of W-Class trams as part of an $8 million project, which brings the trams as close to their original appearance as possible. The W-class tram is a cultural icon to Melbourne, of which those that remain in Melbourne are classified by the National Trust of Australia.

The W-Class trams are being entered into service on the City Circle route, restored to their former glory but adding modern safety equipment and passenger comfort. The popular City Circle has around 3.3 million passenger trips each year. These passengers will experience the trams of yesteryear, with modern comforts

The W-Class trams, which were first introduced onto Melbourne’s tram network in the 1940s and 1950s, are being restored as close to their original appearance as possible.

The work extends beyond what people can see and includes detailed engineering, safety, and structural work to bring them up to modern standards of safety, reliability, passenger comfort, and maintainability.

Each restoration is a significant and complex undertaking involving extensive stripping down and rebuilding. The complete refurbishment of the third W-Class tram includes:

  • Painting and restoring the livery to its original green and gold splendor
  • Restoring the original seating
  • Placement of the heritage logo of the Melbourne Metropolitan Tramways Board on internal glass panels
  • Installing a new PA and passenger information system
  • Installing an improved traction system, which is the ‘engine’ that drives the tram
  • Using LED lighting for headlamps and brake lights to improve visibility.
  • New impact resistant driver’s cabin
  • Removal of high voltage wiring from the driver’s cabin, replaced with 24-volt to improve safety
  • New electronics and wiring to allow for GPS surveillance and improved electrical performance
  • A complete rebuild of the body to include better safety features

Yarra Trams approached Floyd Australia to take on the project of restoring a range of Floyd pressure gauges that were originally installed on the W class Trams. Some of these gauges were at least 60 years young, therefore challenging our Technicians to come up with a working solution to have these gauges brought back to their original splendour.

With numerous hours of intricate work by hand, Floyd Australia managed to produce a range of fully restored workable Pressure gauges to be used on the newly revamped iconic W class Trams.

The end result was truly first-class and intricate craftsmanship displayed by the Floyd Australia technicians on a challenging but rewarding project, which Floyd Australia can be proud of having some involvement in getting the cultural icon of the W class Tram back on the rails.
